to applaud you for your message, for speaking out against the

It’s always powerful to hear someone like Colin Powell speak,
but often times harder for kids to truly absorb those messages,
and for someone in your position, coming from your background
as an entertainer and an artist who is looked up to and admired,
it is that much more meaningful to hear you say what you did. I
know more people can relate to it, when it comes from an icon of
their age group. I wish people like Eminem could do and say
stuff like that. It amazes me that people with lyrical ability like that
don’t have anything better to say. No good message to give, just
one of violence and crap.

Secondly, I have a question about the remix contest. Are old P.E.
samples eligable for the mixes? Like Flav's chuckle at the end of

your vocal samples have been used so much that they're public
domain. True or false?
Anyway, I love true hip hop-the musical art form that takes

for keeping it real! The potential to spread ideas is immense, too
bad not to many rappers take advantage of the fact.

your solo album, your rapstation.com is like WOW!
May be I should write something about myself? Well, I live in the

and hip-hop journalism - I wrote for nearly all big russian
hip-hop magazines as well as for some other musical
periodicals. I know that you like Internet and all abilities it can

possible using ICQ or some chats. I would be really happy if it'll
happens. As you can see, my English is not very good, but I think
that we can understand each other: I knew that you heard some
russian rap - "Broken Sound", if I'm not mistaken.
You know, in Russia there are a lot of dope rap-groups and if you
want I can send you some CDs and tapes to check out. The fact
is that I know a lot of dope rap-groups and they'll be happy to
know your opinion 'bout their stuff. What would you say about it?
May be you could find some interesting sh*t fron Russia, who

Dear Brother Chuck,
Assalamu Alaikum. I pray that this letter finds you in good health,
happy spirits and strong. I am writing you this letter to thank you
for years worth of inspiration. I've never written a "fan letter"
before, but suddenly felt the urge to show my gratitude to you for
being such a positive member of hip hop society and a personal
inspiration. I have been a fan of Public Enemy music for a very
long time now and have always appreciated the message as
well as the beats.
A few days ago I was speaking to a friend of mine, a brother who
is working on the Black August celebration on August-12, he told
me that you were going to host the event this year. Of course,
being a fan, I was extremely excited to hear this news, but since
the event is on the day before I am scheduled to leave to Amman
Jordan, I wont be able to attend. So, I did what anyone else
would do, I begged my homeboy to thank you about 100 times. I
asked him to tell you about how I decided to become an activist
after hearing your music, how throughout my college years I
used "Can't Truss It" as my "theme song" I also asked him to tell
you that you are one of the reasons why I became a teacher, and
why my brother Omar became a musician.
Today I read your article in the Final Call about the Hip Hop
Summit, I had missed the summit this year when I was in
Palestine, and was interested to hear your take on it. After
reading the article I decided I would write you this letter just in
case my friend Kamau was to busy to send all my "thank yous."
So there it is, please know that the knowledge you've spread
throughout the years through your rhymes have meant a whole
lot to people, I know that personally they have meant a world to
me. Thank you for your time and I hope to keep seeing you do
what you're doing.

always been about the realness in life. You deal with the things
we, as a people, must face and enact to start winning in the US
way. Doing all this without losing what is good about ourselves.
I am in the industry. It does not surprise me that the Summit
dissed small biz. Once the record labels realized they could
make off hip hop they decided to convert it to the pop way of
promotion and making of records. I am all for financial
acheivment but the rap game has went in excess of it. It has
become a tool for so many rappers to lie about things they never
have done whilst having beefs that are usually carried out by
their posse or crew. The funny thing is they dont even know what
they are fighting for. I mean most dont own the labels they are
on. Most are not making that much money after all is paid out to
everyone they owe for the front money yet they still have no unity.
One can disagree yet still have unity.
I am aware that it has been a systematic plan from the beginning
in this country to have disunity. I expect the lower income African
Americans to continue this not those who are actually
prospering. It saddens me to think that they dont realize the
power they possess. They would rather follow the protocol of
landing in jail to provide the credence of their credibility in the rap
game. Far too many people are mad at people like Will Smith
because he doesnt go to jail. I am not a Will Smith fan but he is a
good race model for we, African Americans.
This brings me back to the reason I felt compelled to write you
Chuck. You are an excellent example of a race model that African
Americans can be proud of. You are strong, intelligent, honest,
and commanding of respect because you give it. You dont pull
any punches on the truth and in some ways it might have
hindered your ability to have that ultimate commercial success.
For me and many, you have effected positively and provided
hope.
Thanks for the 411 on the summit. Your candor is needed in
these troubled times. I am muslim but not of the nation. May
Allah watch over you and yours. Peace be unto you Brother.

knowledge of self. The 21 degree in the Lost Found Muslim
Lesson #2 (1-40) talks of this being the world of the devil and the

It is with this understanding that DX 21 outlines his objectives.
To reveal the divine that is unknown to those in 21 who have no
knowledge of self.
After talking with Kevin Powell this evening, I thought that I should
reach out to you. I was at Black August and took exception to
some of your statements, not beacuse I am defending Hot 97,
but because I have been there for almost two years and very few
seem to consider me a resource to the propagation of the much
needed "right foods" that the 85% that listen to that station need.
I have also been made aware that some people were disturbed
by my statements. I did not see why, since I did not lie, but I was
made to realize that since I was the first to really talk about Black
August at length in Morning Drive on Hot 97, my negative
comments may have put a cloud over the message that I was
trying to convey.
Why is this relevant to you?
I went on a tangent because after being in hostile waters over
and over again with people that I should be bonding with, I was
upset at your statements. Why? Because I took them personally.
As a person whose thinking was partially shaped and strongly
influenced by your work, I felt as if I was been rebuked by a
parent to a certain extent, when I had done nothing but my best to
live according to my upbringing.
I do not agree with generalizations. I did not seek to generalize
with my statements, but many people within the movement have
generalized Hot 97 in that they do not consider what I can bring
to the table as the one who is behind enemy lines.
Harry Allen seemed to understand when I spoke to him Sunday. I
am nothing but righteous, I use unorthodox tactics, but ours is an
unorthodox battle.
I wish to correspond with you further, I hope I didn't ramble in this
too much. I have a lot to express and this does it no justice.
I met you at the UN for the Hiphop proclaimation signing. I sent
you an e-mail, I heard nothing from you. If you are going to go
