DIRTY BOMBS

June 19, 2002

Yes, the t-domes will be running again... Forgive the delay, it was just that the final deliverables for ‘REVOLVERLUTION’ had to be turned in and it now seems that the record is on the way. I have no expectations whatsoever and look forward to playing a PE record across the earth again, meeting peeps from the ENEMY BOARD, and in some cases performing with them as many have works placed on www.slamjamz.com. With 8 new tracks, 4 interactive remixes, and 3 live joints peppered with collectible recordings, I suppose some journalists might make it seem like a copout. But again, I don’t really think journalists are doing a thorough job of really listening to 12 plus, new tracked rap albums like they say they do. All the major writers are reporting on how the music business is crumbling, looking for a new sound somewhere, someplace, somehow, yet increasingly being over-swamped by the high stacks of CDs on their own desk. So, it becomes convenient to only cover the already covered.

Seriously, I’m very tired of the double-standard by the music media when it comes to rap and hip hop. We get treated in an infantile, yet disposable manner. We get ‘ghetto-ized’ and pigeon-holed into being considered past prime because of the lack of a teenage audience. I overstand all of this, mainly because that demographic is religious to responding to BET and urban radio for their answers. The egg controls the chicken and the chicks. Yet, we still have to hear and hail ELVIS, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER, the BEATLES, HENDRIX and SLY. Rightfully so, as understandably there’s no such format as classic rap radio as there is in rock radio. Sheeee, what made OZZY remain relevant past his BLACK SABBATH prime and way before his twisted family show? The music... It never dies, and increasingly more classic rap artists are learning you don’t fight your creative past , you work with it, and this is what the people want.

The generational divide was bound to happen… and...

NELLY vs. Blastmaster KRS-ONE... is a fine example on the one sided brainwashed fact that major artists, and the volume of sales they do is the most important aspect of the music business. That’s a fallacy. While I dig NELLY I’d be damned if an accounting department should have say so on what’s hot and what’s not. I took my kids and nieces to peep NELLY and the ST LUNATICS with DESTINYS CHILD and others during the MTV Tour. They were tight, and great for that audience. However, like I said earlier, the generational situations of rap are coming into play right now and KRS-ONE is playing entirely at another level. Recordings to add to the shows, no doubt. Still in anything else newness bows to experience whether it’s sports, art or professions that require full knowledge of that game. The 60 meter dash and the marathon are two different glories that are run differently. I for one hope that NELLY gets a greatest hits album worth of material, at least getting to his 3rd album, as well as understanding that his art and rhymes should speak for themselves instead of UNIVERSAL gassing him up to feed their bottom line.

DAVEY D My man DAVE is probably one of the most underrated contributors to hip hop, and the rap field period. Radio serpent CLEARCHANNEL fired him late last year after eloquently growing hip hop in the BAY. Then they have the nerve to see if they can put hiphop in motion in the NYC area with Power 105. Moves like this make no sense at all. During the convo I had with DAVE driving down from BOSTON we talked about….

WHAT I REALLY THINK ABOUT THE R KELLY THING. First of all, when somebody asks me did I see it, why would I? If I know there’s an underage girl getting it, why would I even entertain it? Still in a microcosm of R. KELLY defense I blame today’s TV and radio programmers for legitimizing child porn, even soft porn that these videos depict. C’mon, I’m not a prude but damn can the adults be more hidden in our freak thing? What does a 14 year old know about a club? They can’t get in one. What does a 13 year old know about corvousier? They can’t get it legally… When your sellin sex, weed and clubs on 106 and Park at 3pm…who else are you sellin it to. Normal grown folk are working somewhere for real. Now when grown folks are sayin how they watched the tape, I wonder if they themselves got off to it. Keep the images away from children, that’s my point.

POWER 105 IN NYC Talking to blond cat STEVE SMITH, he feels that a higher demographic target can sweep listeners from the increasingly infantile HOT 97, a station that he started by funneling both the BAD BOY and WU TANG empires in regular rotation to influence charts and other stations across the nation. In visiting the station, saying wsssup to ED LOVER and DOCTOR DRE where I was asked to come up one morning, I broke my sleep to venture west on the LIRR then catch the F to their building. Immediately I was smacked in the head with super-corporatism. The once creative aspect of combining new and older classic joints seemed fresh when they launched…maybe it was because they lacked records, so they had no other choices. Well, anyway I saw SONY rep, MGR. Michael MAULDIN bringing in LIL BOW WOW who was scheduled for his promotion of his new movie LIKE MIKE. No beef , I was happy to get autographs galore for my kids and nieces, thanx LBW. Still, after ED finished asking LBW what car he liked, and getting NWA as his favorite all time act outta him, I got about 2 minutes in to talk about the upcoming rally pending downtown and just some general logic. If this was real radio like back in the days they woulda gladly gave me more time. But a job is a job and in this case the boss was a computer. With the morning show going off at 10am and the rally starting at 3:30 I had 51/2 hours stranded in NEW YORK. If it wasn’t for fine chicks... on air jockette DEJA, and MORNING SHOW Mgr. LELANI ..I would’ve vomited in stale boredom. Sorry, but corporations have ruined radio to the point of emotionless sterility. It felt like working at SEARS as I was getting hit every 35 minutes by a barrage of computer precision paid for top 40 spins.

THE DOWNTOWN RALLY IN NYC One thing that was convenient was the accessibility of the F Train on getting downtown to city hall. I love taking the train because it’s the real deal. Especially to the rally after being invited by RUSSELL SIMMONS to give hip hop statements against the butchering of the school budgets by BILLIONAIREMAYORBLOOMBERG. I commended RUSSELL on using his music and influence to get the JAYZs, PUFFSTERS, NOREs and WYCLEFs to further make statements. After I came up outta the ground "the people,’’ the peeps’ escorted me to the stage amongst signing autographs and conversations. I got to the stage and RUN brought me on so I could say that the mayor was prohibiting the cities youth from having the proper tools and foundation to become what he is, a billionaire. In these money focused blingin times it resonated quite well and I was out. I wondered why so many cats took car services and limos to the rally. It was funny, seeing some cats protected by the police, rallying against the police and made me think about ‘thespians’ etc. My point was also that the ‘superstars’ who the ‘peeps’ make should sometimes roll up their sleeves, catch the bus and the train, wash a car for the fans instead of believing the star shit.

I JUST BOUGHT A CHAIN I can’t believe in all this bling blingism that the Platinum era has only brought back ‘SILVER’! On TV cats can’t tell the difference, and I just picked up a nice shiny silver chain for $51.00 with a ‘D’ on it. I cant tell the difference between some JAKE THE JEWELER sh*t where cats is spending crib mortgages for their necks. Hey, I wore fake gold ropes our first tour in 1987, competing with the chains ERIC B and RAKIM and LL had on stage. The crowd couldn’t tell the difference as I went to a department store in RICHMOND, VA... and bought a bag of 30 fake gold chains and draped them over SIWS and all... even the sound tech. Then the crowd really tripped when we threw our chains in the audience. Whadda kid know, anyway? Today we are back to the same mentality, only now ‘SILVER’ doesn’t have to be fake. I tell cats to be real and they can wear fake sh#t, as opposed to being fake wearing real sh#t they can’t protect. LONG LIVE SILVER, HOORAY… Believe me, stick to your beliefs long enough and they return full cycle on steroids.

I’m trying to get TERMINATOR X, at least on SLAMJAMZ, to promote his beats on www.terminator-x.com. You can hit him up at terminatorx@termin ator-x.com. He now understands the power of the web. When we were on SMOKING GROOVES in 1998, the birth of www.publicenemy.com and the Enemy Board weren’t fully realized by everybody in my crew.

PE SLAMJAMZ VIDEO PERFORMANCES FLIP BOSTON OUT. Filmmaker ROBERT PATTEN-SPRUILL and the FILMSHACK did his thing by energizing the entire area of BOSTON with the shooting of the PUBLIC ENEMY video ‘GOTTA GIVE THE PEEPS WHAT THEY NEED’. It was a 3 day shoot starting with shooting a radio appearance with WBCN on Friday. Doing an all day shoot at restaurant MISSISSISIPIIS’ on Saturday. Then, climaxing with a power packed day on Sunday at club MIDDLE EAST in CAMBRIDGE where we earlier performed takes for ‘PEEPS’ and then headed over to the world champion NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS spanking new CMGI stadium where we performed in front of 45,000 WBCN fanatics. It was crazy performing in a stadium again where the most you can do is hold the mike to your face and run like crazy like a low-budget MICK JAGGER. It was great running with FLAV and the crew. DJ LORD was doing a drum and bass gig in AUSTRAILIA therefore, to the rescue, DJ JOHNNY JUICE filled in admirably and it was a brilliant job of it , being that JUICE masterfully produced ‘PEEPS.’ After that we tripped back to BOSTON from FOXBORO, where KYLE JASON was shooting footage for FAMILY AFFAIR which will hopefully be released as a special 911 version this upcoming one year remembrance. After that, the MIDDLE EAST swelled up to capacity where we performed a 3 1/2 hour set complete with KYLE JASON opening with FAMILY AFFAIR and STRONG, which will be heard real soon on www.slamjamz.com. Then THE 7TH OCTAVE, filming a roasting version of ‘WHAT GOOD IS A BOMB?’ PE also shot clips for REVOLVERLUTION and Flav’s ‘CAN A WOMAN MAKE A MAN LOSE HIS MIND?’ As I think back, I think we should’ve shot PUT IT UP as well because the crowd was bananas.

Big ups go out to the SLAM staff for making it all happen smooth, and the first person to person encounter with Mike Gregoire aka mgee@slamjamz.com who single handedly has defined the SLAMJAMZ look creating the slamjamz art department. Mgee fit in well amongst us cats hanging out and clownin, especially Saturday night during the LEWIS-TYSON fight which was set up by UNO THE PROPHET, another SLAM act. Speaking of SLAM, big ups out to SHAWN FRANKLIN, sandf@cox.net, of the SCALLIONS www.thescallions.com, who beared the heat upfront during the show. Expect these acts to open for PE throughout the remainder of the year on the ‘REVOLVERLUTION WORLD TOUR.’

LEWIS-TYSON The difference? The corners, for real. EMANUEL STEWARD doesn’t play. while Mike’s corner was fulla rah-rah and hyperbolic street talk. No body shots thrown by MIKE. Head stopped moving in 2nd round. The LEWIS jitters had dissipated by the 3rd round. Plus all that LENNOX LEWIS is a punk talk was spoken by cats that don’t know boxing. The man’s a giant with skills. Couple that with EMANUEL STEWARD, cats will have problems for real. ROY JONES JR. bored? Just move up and fight one of these two cats. That will be fun.

PONY Bringing back the brand I used to wear in the 70s, I ran into DANNY BOY from HOUSE OF PAIN who hooked me up with the contact as well as a box of clothes. Thus, RISA from PONY also sent out a box during the video shoot, where I’m wearing the brand. Yeah, PONY... since I’m retro now, how can I not be down with them? Possibly, they’ll be the official gear of the ‘REVOLVERLUTION WORLD TOUR,’ get ready buses and planes….

THE ABC 20/20 PAYOLA Scandal Show Finally came on and it seemed tame, compared to how a lotta these radio cats were nervous at first. Still, I wanna tell them that $417,000 to promote an act thru radio is buck-crazy. The people are controlled like sheeple.

CUBA Right now the CUBA situation for PE is 50%, how can something within earshot of MIAMI radio be sooooo farrrr to us peeps here? We’re looking at mid-August during their hip hop festival.

ESPN THE MAGAZINE / NETS Well, what can I say? My friend, ex-GEAR magazine editor, SARAH CRISTOBAL is now at ESPN, the magazine, and she wanted to cover the Strong Island crew and studios watching NBA FINALS Game 4 funeral between the LAKERS and the NETS. JASON KIDD was the man this season still as SHAQ and KOBE were accelerated to heights by the KINGS. CHRIS WEBBER is my man but when the KINGS got what they asked for in overtime Game 7, I saw fetal positions and silent cries for mommy. One mustn’t be afraid to fail and ‘go out like that’... sometimes that hip hop attitude don’t work in sport. KOBE don’t care, that’s why he’s an assassin. Thanks SARAH. The gathering roll call; myself, HANK SHOCKLEE, KYLE JASON, JOHNNY JUICE, AKEIM from the MICRANOTS, SON SLAWTA MELQUAN, KENDO, ABNORMAL and some friends SARAH brought. The event was better than the game.

MELLENCAMP, BUSTA RHYMES I thank these cats for allowing my work amongst theirs. CUTTIN HEADS and SHUT EM DOWN… Both of them called me and said they’d send gold and platinum plaques…thank you.

HEY, I JUST GOT SOME RIMS… I’m sponsoring a rim company next month with a photo shoot in CALI. They’ll give me rims in exchange. 22s on a 1994 MONTERO? Whatever happened to good ol 15s.

'First reports on 'REVOLVERLUTION' are by way of ABBEY GOODMAN of MTV.COM, where I was quoted comparing the passion of the ENEMY BOARD trekkies. I hope my crew wasn’t offended, but I grew up on STAR TREK and all one has to do is peep the clay animation figures in the 'GIVE IT UP' video to see my assembling of the crew in 'enterprise form. Bonnnnnes, spaaaahck, scaaaahhht...to go where no where no other hip hop group has gone before..

Last but not least, continuing our mission of unprecedented musical interactivity, we at www.publicenemy.com are looking for a small interactive managing staff of about 2-3 people to help manage the Public enemy site. The ENEMY BOARD runs on its own and I submit to the TERRORDOME page. However the other areas are open for management, especially in this non dormant year. Information, especially Tour schedules in the HYPE area, and PHOTOS consistently loaded in the gallery are a must. New video and audio clips are available for monthly load. MPE connects mp3s thru SLAMJAMZ, new bio and updated soldier info as well as a bi-weekly PE newsletter. Any volunteers? Mail me mistachuck@rapstati on.com. Also we're looking for key peeps to contribute to bringthenoise and rapstation as well. Hit me up.

Son of a bush asks BRAZIL do you have blacks?

I’m not even gonna…

I’m out, Mistachuck@rapstation.com
