TOUR TERRORDOME...
October 07, 2002 Tour terrrordome yup yup, since the eMpTy V piece I’ve gotten a
ton of responses that spoke in favor of dissing the channel.
Again, I stress the fact that it was about the principal of their
refusal. How can you accept the stereotype, and get testy when
an artist has a political viewpoint? This was a perfect example of
a giant corporation, deemed infallible shaking at the foundation.
How? You always can make corporations respond by identifying
the decision making participants and singling them out. I don’t
see this as a problem as I’m forced to cosign my statements as
an individual, so my opposing viewpoint should be exposed as
well. It’s only fair. Who’s ever gonna challenge VIACOM’S hold on
the images of America? In this case they alerted organizations
who take this seriously.
They don’t really care about music as much as leveling out the
human rights field. They can’t be bought out, and the MUMIA,
JAMIL AL AMIN rejection struck a big nerve that the channel is
gonna have to deal with. On the flip, MTV news finally did have a
discussion about this with me during our performance at the
WORLD, also in TIMES SQUARE just down the block. I sat
across, under the famed teleprompter, and handled my
viewpoint. Seriously, this effort should expand the possibility of
pushing black faces past the point of being ‘ blackface‘ parody
…open the doors for increased visibility of the DEAD PREZs,
DILATED PEOPLES, BLACKALICIOUS, maybe encourage cats
like TALIB KWELI to stay on the same path and make artists feel
like they don’t have to sacrifice their intellect for the sake of being
accepted by MTV standards. Hopefully we have set a pick for
soul giants like ERYKAH BADU (in whose video yours truly
happens to appear with DP), COMMON and THE ROOTS to
never concide their great art.
Impossebulls promo which is a sticker shaped like a dollar bill,
looks like a dollar bill, seems like a dollar bill but is really an
advertisement for ‘Who Wants To Act Like A Millionaire’ a
www.slamjamz.com single under the IMPOSSBULLS artist
page.
SLAM jamz artists… speaking of SLAM artists the
IMPOSSEBULLS put it down in the opener at PiTTSBURGH, then
later doing their thing in CLEVELAND and DETROIT capping it in
CINCY on Sunday. THE IMPS show energy and great continuity
on stage, the aspect of them having a forming routine is helped
by the fact that their stage gear consisting of uniform cap and
shirt complete with ‘BULLS’ logo make them look different than
just five different cats screaming anonymous joints on stage.
Since a concerts first priority for the goer is to ‘see’ the IMPS
visuals keep it interesting indeed. The addition is the fact that
they sound good as well.
The SCALLIONS set their zone off in WORCESTER and
AMHERST MASS, with a miscommunication that left them off the
PROV date. UNO the PROPHET did his thing in WORCESTER
and was guest starred by female underground mc prodigy
MEDUSA. Also UNO brought it again in PROV. KENDO and
GENERAL POP did their thing in PHILLY and NEW YORK which
by the way had a ROLLING STONE review. REGENERATED
HEADPIECE did the most out of their far too short set. They
proved much skill and energy. KENDO had a mixup but
performed in the middle of the PROFESSOR GRIFF/ 7th OCTAVE
set …over a LED ZEP track. KENDO is a presence and GEN
POP will do their thing wih a few key west coast dates. Jahi is the
consumate professional and ripped it in DC. Unrelated but
possibly future SLAM acts also ripped, PHILLYS ‘PROPHETS OF
THE GHETTO’ put it down with much class and skill, as well as
the CHOP SHOP and IRON TRIANGLE getting it on as well.
Expect some mp3s in the near future...
The final IMPS performance, will be a split opening bill with
FORCE OF NATURE, who’ll be arriving from ATLANTA.
CHICAGO presents poetess AREWA, and KANSAS CITYs SOUL
PROJECT. Denver intros the ORANJ MECHANIK, NWD,
CHILLIOUS and GENERAL POP rounds out the west coast with
JAHI again puttin it down in the bay. All these groups sounds can
be found here at www.slamjamz.com the 21st century record
label.
Flav status…yeah I guess by now everybody has heard the Flav
status about him serving 9 weeks for the license violation. The
judge sentenced him knowing a tour was pending. The judge
also stated that he wasn’t in the game of ‘LETS MAKE A DEAL.’
It’s the BRONX court system; New York… the pit of the belly of
the beast. Instead of the original plan to cram a world tour into 3
and a half months from September to December I decided to
spread it over the next year and a half. Flav will be free to get
down. All responses on this tour have been great as we made
the transition of just PUBLIC ENEMY into the ‘PE TURBO
REVOLVERLUTION REVUE’ backed by the 7th OCTAVE’s torrid
rhythm section consisting of KHARI WYNN from MEMPHIS on
guitar, BRIAN HARGROVE on bass who has contributed to
SLAMjamz as HARDGROOVES FLYING CIRCUS and the FINE
ARTS MILITIA, and the incredible find of ATIBA ‘T BONE ‘
MOTTEN… son of drummer DENNIS MOTTEN. This funky
drummer hits them beats like he’s mad at em. Powerful. Along
with DJ LORD I’m having incredible fun tripping thru a fantastic
voyage of rap, hip hop, soul, rock, and funk.
Great friend DAVEY D happened to stop by two of the east coast
dates PROVIDENCE and NYC and its always a pleasure
hanging with DAVE. always in the trenches trying to bring the rap
and hip hop game up along with a plethora of great ideas,
especially with the show having breakdancing parts, and a SON
OF A BUSH video idea. On the way back to the hotel from the gig
I turned a 5 minute drive into 30 with a twisted sense of RHODE
ISLAND directions.
Florida State was a soothing peaceful trip to TALLAHASSEE,
FLA. Originally, since it was slated to be my only college
speaking engagement, I took my time with these students and
relished the experience. I signed many books and was very
animated until my energy ran dry at around 1am in the morning.
Saw ESPN special on JOE FRAZIER that damn near left me in
tears. The heart of a champion is still not respected even today
and it kind of ticked me off that PHILLY had put a ROCKY statue
up at the library when SMOKIN JOE was truly that city’s real life
rock. The man has a reason to feel hurt.
Speaking of boxing, now that FLOYD MAYWHETHER SR got
OSCAR DE LA HOYA to slip and slideduck thru punches, look
out hes got that that underdog spirit. VARGAS came in swol and
real fight fans knew that he was being sized up for a late round
execution… and it happened. That fight was a signal to the
millennial generation who swear by style rather than
substance…
Cellerful of Motown is an incredible collection of unreleased
material from the hitsville vaults in the 1960s. The FUNK
BROTHERS put it down in the MOTOWN PIT.
Big ups to hall of famers KOOL DJ RED ALERT who brought us
on in NEW YORK, and KURTIS BLOW who was providing helpful
tips alongside DELITE from STETSASONIC and CHUCK
CREEKMUR from the incredible WWW.ALLHIPHOP.COM and TONY SAMUEL
from the underrrated IMSOMNIAC MAGAZINE. KEITH and HANK
SHOCKLEE stopped thru.
SHAWN CARTER who is serving as the tour’s SLAMjamz stage
manager as well as hypeman and emcee just got me a copy of
SAM MOORE’S solo CD which is incredible. Recorded in 1970
for ATLANTIC it was thought to be lost in the vaults.
LORD KEL ARROYO was at the Cleveland show… a vast
supplier of scouring the earth for recorded PE performances
amongst others..
DATES... the west coast swing will be sweet as the PE HIGH
OCTANE 7TH OCTAVE TURBO REVUE will wind up in ANAHEIM
and SAN FRANCISCO at the famed FILLMORE AUDITORIUM on
Thursday night OCTOBER 10th. Its gonna go down hard to def…
MTV LETTER LA TIMES…. the LA times asked me to write a
piece about the MTV thing where I submitted a part 2 ..
WHERE TO SPIT?… for 15 years the dilemma I had in my career
was where to spit on stage. For real , I never could do it at the
crowd , and the the sides have always been the best option.
ROOTS / OKAY PLAYER... I didn’t know their headquarters was
at the ELECTRIC FACTORY in Philly. I dig that organization they
make it a pleasure to be a part of the hip hop universe. MCA
Records is trying their best to hone into the careful fanbases that
the ROOTS, COMMON, BLACKALICIOUS, and others have.
CAPITOL got DILATED PEOPLES and this is the test for hip hops
future in the major labels scheme. Rather than just developing
the art , it seems that downloading has forced them into having
to pay close attention to building true artists again.
This book was given to me while lecturing at WESLEYAN U in
CONNECTICUIT last year. It’s called The American Directory of
Certified Uncle Toms… This is an excellent review of the book
posted at Amazon.com.
"A Daring Rebuke to Multicultural white white supremacists",
June 27, 2002 Reviewer: Vincent Thomas from Washington, DC.
The American Directory of Certified Uncle Toms is a well
documented, scholarly, and witty critique of the most stridently
"Eurocentric" elements of the black community. The book clearly
distinguishes black interests (economic, political, and creative
Black self-determination) from the practices of Black
Eurocentrists (undermining grassroots black leadership,
justifications for white supremacy, artistic portrayals of black
pathology for financial gain, and fronting anti-Black agendas with
no accountability to Black constituencies). Finally, we have a
publication that courageously critiques white-liberalism, black
conservatism, elitism in the black upper and middle classes,
and an inordinate Zionist influence (the section where Ron
Dellums was forced to have a family meeting because he feared
a political backlash for not supporting aid to Isreal was
especially telling). Whether you agree or disagree with all entries
(Dubois and Washington both with five stars!), The American
Directory of Certified Uncle Toms is an important work.
The passing of ALAN LOMAX signified the end of a certain
discovery on the roots of american cultures. Gathering the roots
of the blues LOMAX wanted the pure uncut stuff always. I wonder
what he thought about hip hop , at least we know what he
thought about corps..
We now have cultural machines so powerful that one singer can
reach everybody in the world, and make all the other singers feel
inferior because they're not like him, Mr. Lomax once reflected.
“Once that gets started, he gets backed by so much cash and so
much power that he becomes a monstrous invader from outer
space, crushing the life out of all the other human possibilities.
My life has been devoted to opposing that tendency.”
“Alan Lomax, Who Raised Voice of Folk Music in U.S., Dies at
87,” The New York Times, July 20, 2002,
Also condolences go out to the COLD CRUSH BROTHERS who
lost ERIC ‘MONEY RAY’ HOSKINS to cancer just after being
diagnosed 5 weeks prior. A good cat, and always down for the
cause of hip hop. EASY AD who calls me from time to time is
one of the most caring cats in the game and it hurts to hear this
happen to such good cats. Yes it strikes me by surprise also
because MONEY always appeared the best picture of health.
