AT THE EDGE OF OUR SENSES
October 24, 2004
We're living in a time of 'if you cant make up your mind, somebody will make it up for
you. Not only is this a turning point for the USA, but a turning point for the planet. Ive
commented before on americans breaking their chains on their brains as the middle of the
land is getting more attention than it has gotten in many years.
C'mon, Wisconsin,Ohio.Pennsylvania concerns have been truly passed over these past
decades...the problems and issues of the heartland has been greatly ignored. Everyone
seems to focus and center their attentions toward the supermedia of the times. The
polarization of a nation has rarely been this so apparent. Regardless of who wins the
election on November 2nd, half the country will be dissatisfied. People of color must not
sleep at this time. The P Diddy led Citizen Change slogan VOTE OR DIE is perhaps the
greatest marketed urge to the masses Puffy Combs has conjured up. Its so true because
the disconnect is not only americas detachment of the black community, but the black
community rapidly becoming separated from itself. The lack of
knowledge, employment, empowering of self has individualized a mass, while making it
vulnerable for mass destruction.
25 years since the beginning of political r&b(reagan and bush) the unraveling of the
black community back into a heavy plantation state is evidenced by the the realities of
child care cuts (even if the single or double parents work, who watches and teaches the
kids from 1-7years?) healthcare (its not uncommon to see over 40 blacks victims of stroke
and early heart attacks, not to mention the continued devestation of A.I.D.S which the vice
prez Dick was clueless on.)..and 1.8 million in prison (a corporate field day, forwarding an
industrial complex that can plan on building and housing 5 million by 2007.) Anyone
saying that BUSHKERRY is the same devil cut exactly from the same cloth is not keeping
score. With John Kerry blackfolk can buy a few months time to get together and then
address our issues to a half shut door. BUSHkreig will have a door way shut immediately
on november 3rd.
As for the rest of americans the water will rise slowly watching those unable to swim in
the millennium muck, drown in their messy tears. The holocaust suffered will be no more
than a hologram to everyone else. Thus a near future where a boardroom programs a
mass people, what they see, hear, and think is here to some and tidal waving to a gang of
others.
The aspect of letting the americans 'eat cake' so to speak is here and now. The status
quo is searching for a scapegoat at the buzzer. The debates skated over many a key issue
for people of color, still they did no worse than the corporate so called urban radio
stations who broadcast to millions of blackfolk. While in Milwaukee the same stations that
went fullblast to sell tickets for the RKELLY-JAY Z concert, fail to remind those folk with a
prior felony that they too can vote. But obviously it is not the intention in amerikkka to
truly have americans in control of their own capacities, thus the gutting out and the
burning starts at the bottom..............
I haven't really had the time to bask in this 30 year anniversary of hip hop, thus 25 year
of rap records. Vh1 has blasted upwards into the documentation of the artform again, with
their hip hop you dont stop blazing 5 part series on the genre. They got all the right
players movers and shakers involved with longtime DefJam publicist archivist guru Bill
Adler, scribetorian Nelson George, and filmaking documentarians Hart and Dana Heinz
Perry. I have been involved with all 3 at one time or another during my career, and i know
that these are people who provide structure to the chaos and disorder of the rapgame. A
chaos that's endorsed and seemingly favored by the overall industry at hand.
Ive been waiting for structure and organization for 25 years from within, but now its
suffice to say we will have to get it from wherever, whomever, however. Im tired of the
disrespect the SUGARHill gets from the pundits of history. I remember quite clearly the
electricity of october-november 1979. Granted they weren't Grandmaster Flash or the
Cold Crush who at that time were making noise with their innovations of KOOL HERC-
AFRIKA BAMBATTAA inventions morphing from the DJ to the emcee ,but i clearly recall
finding little flaw in the skills of the gang. I see Big Bank Hank and Wonder Mike all the
time but i forget to ask wheres the Master Gee. Coming from Long Island who was i to say
that those cats from New Jersey were not authentic ...? We all watched the same local news
and tv, listened to the same radio stations, had the same sports teams regardless of the
borders. I do know that Jersey had some fine women, and since the beginnings of rap was
a party genre me and my fellas would rather trip over to some college in NJ,rather than
some club or park in the BX. Long Islanders from the lack of public transit past 11 pm, was
car culture by default thus we drove anywhere and to all parts of the tri state area. Thus I
feel Wonder Mike when he says that they've been disrespected thruout time, but i'm here
to tell you that they're loved around the globe , respected by yours truly, and an
unremovable piece of brilliant history...
A special dedication is to the great blues Chess Records bassist Lui Lui Satterfield , who
passed on earlier in the month. For those who recall he was featured in the Godfathers
And Sons PBS special last year now out on dvd, as one of the Electrik Mudcats. Last year
we played together at the Chicago Blues Festival. Always a great spirit , he was teacher to
Earth Wind and Fire axeman Verdine White. Vibrations as he would say, its all about
Vibrations...
Lemme tell you how great the cats from Living Colour are...the fantastic foursome of
VERNON REID,WILL CALHOUN ,DOUG WINBUSH,and COREY GLOVER are so humble as well
as putting together a force that ranks amongst the all time best in the genre. The reason is
that they've always brought funk to the metal..
Our shows in boston and NYC were smokin together with us opening in NY
And we closed it the night before across the street from Fenway.
Had a rent a car with NY plates and had to get it outta Boston, because when the RedSox
down in the 7th, down 3-0 in the series at that time it probably wouldn't be a cool vehicle
to sit outside of fenway if the bosox lost. Well yall know the rest. People look at me like im
crazy because im not twisted that the Yanks lost. Well the devil gotta die someday, and the
buy it all squad gotta feel the heat sometimes...
Miss fine Shon Gables of cbstv channel 2 in NYC and Mario Bosquez put together a pretty
nice piece for the 100th year anniversary of the ny subway. It never made any sense to
drive in midtown manhattan and definitely believe in taking the best transit system in the
world.
Seriously..my 2 favorite magazines are waxpoetics and URB. These magazines are
thorough and give me the details on a past scene and present and future one respectively.
Alan Keyes reminds me of the blackcat that would put on a hood and ride alongside the
KKK unabashedly..
JAMIE FOXX my man, ive been fiendin for this flick ever since i heard it was to be. Sittin
down hearing JAmIE himself talking about how the other actors in the flick put it down had
me pumped off the thought. He aint had to sell me on it, im a RAY CHARLES fanatic and in
awe of JFs diverse skills. Again the movie can do no wrong,id listen to it on radio.
Ran into Chris Rock after the VH1 show...and had a great conversation with FAT JOE ...two
real New Yorkers who truly dig being with the people...
Have i mentioned lately thanking the rapgods for a cat like ?uestlove. This dudes
musicology helps cut the myths down as his eloquence as an artist and spokesman keeps
the pundits at a distance. Peep his recruiting of Big Daddy Kane on BOOM! fresh off THE
TIPPING POINT album for backtracking eclectic sounds peep THE PHILADELPHIA
EXPERIMENT from a couple years back...
Doggone...
Tell the world i cant stand pitbulls...what in the world happened to German Shepards and
even Dobermans in the black community? Who in the hell would want a animal that would
eat your kids...? Banned in australia i wouldnt be surprised if Oz
Put em all into the south pacific on a burning sinking barge...i dont know whats more
wicked them dogs or the fools that've been breeding them the past 20 years..
San Andreas video game dj plays old school music, and i play a character...
playing the jams. Its a twist, and i hear the game is crazyb violent. To me since i dont play
any video games, maybe a game is more than a game, but my angst against much material
is that is broadcast across the air or cablewaves..not necessarily a video game that
depends on being acquired in a store. Im not even against the aspect of Gangster Rap as a
form but the lack of balance of ALL of the art for the sake of sales. A popular video game
may influence reality as well, but at that point we must really figure a way to re-configure
reality. Holla at me if you like the radio station on the game because chances are i'll never
hear it....
Stay awake...because the name of the game is to put you to sleep , and the next part is to
keep you asleep.......
gone
