There Goes the Musical Neighborhood
On April 18th Public Enemy transformed L.A.’s Nokia Theater into the latest version of the ‘Terrodome’, when they were formally inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Along with Heart, Donna Summer, Randy Newman, Albert King, Lou Adler, Quincy Jones, and Rush, P.E. helps to expand and stretch the malleable definition of Rock ‘n’ Roll royalty.
On a night reserved for celebrating rocks most influential and storied entertainers, Mr. Chuck chose to acknowledge the roots and the inspiration:
"We all come from the damn blues. Let's not get it twisted. We studied the forms of music in DJ culture... we've always known and paid respect to where music comes from."
The Enemy then proceeded to creatively connect and honor their new co-inductees, by mixing samples of Rush, Jones, and Summer into their raucous set; reminding us that music is a structure that builds, enhances, and draws on what has come before.
The newly crowned kings of hip-hop, including an enthusiastic Terminator X, galvanized the audience with their power-packed performances of legendary classics, Bring the Noize and Fight the Power; two tracks that famously meshed political ideology, pop-culture, and the raised-fist defiance that epitomizes this family of performers.
